SAN DIEGO (FOX 5/KUSI) -- President Donald Trump’s 25% tariffs on imported cars and parts is expected to go into effect this week. Some San Diego County car dealerships say this will impact American brands too, not just imported cars like BMW and Toyota.
“This will definitely impact the botto
m line for dealerships, not just ours but everyone’s,” said Fernando Osorio. As the Director of Parts for Perry Ford in National City, Osorio says while Ford Motor Company has factories here in the United States, the company also relies on many parts produced overseas in Europe, Canada and Mexico.
Osorio says Perry Ford has begun stockpiling common parts like transmissions, brakes, engines and spark plugs to help soften the blow for consumers who need repairs soon.
“I don’t think it’s going to be this immediate effect but it’s going to snowball,” said Osorio. “It will take a couple months before consumers start seeing that.”
He says prices for an average $40,000 car could increase by about three to four thousand dollars on their lot and he says calls for services and parts are already slowing down. On a normal Tuesday. the service center at Perry Ford is usually filled with three rows of cars ready to get serviced. “We are already noticing this,” he said.
Meanwhile. he says in the last few weeks car sales have increased mainly because customers want to buy now before prices increase.
“There’s no reason to wait. We want to get it done before the tariffs,” said Kathy Munnik. who was at Perry Ford shopping for a car. “Better safe than sorry. We are going to get it done today.” ...read more read less
