BURRILLVILLE, R.I. (WPRI) — The Rhode Island Department of Environmental Management (DEM) announced Wednesday that 151 acres of forested land in Burrillville will now be open for habitat restoration and public recreation.
Known as the St. Angelo property, or "Sweet’s Hill," the land has been
incorporated into the DEM’s 1,684-acre Black Hut Management Area.

The DEM said the newly conserved land will protect key habitats, including forested uplands, streams, vernal pools, and fields dense with pollinator-friendly plants. It will also be open to the public.
"The conservation of his property as an addition to Black Hut Management Area is another win for expanding recreational opportunities and protecting important habitat," DEM Director Terry Gray said in a press release.

The DEM completed the acquisition through a $911,000 grant from the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service's (USFWS) Wildlife Restoration Program. The grant covered 75% of the property's appraised value, with the remaining $425,250 coming from Open Space Bond funds.
"DEM appreciates the support of the USFWS, as well as hunters and target shooters, whose purchase of firearms and ammunition in the state is taxed specifically to fund conservation projects like this helping to preserve land for the public," Gray added.
The property will be managed by the DEM's Division of Fish & Wildlife for hunting, trapping, and conservation efforts.
Since 1985, the DEM's Land Conservation Program has helped protect more than 20,000 acres across Rhode Island.
