Numerous new film, TV titles hit DVD, Bluray market

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KGET) -- Those looking to pick up a few movie selections to watch during Spring Break will have a variety of choices.
“A Complete Unknown” Grade B: The strength of “A Complete Unknown” is not Timothee Chalamet’s performance as Bob Dylan but exists in all the suppor
ting players. Edward Norton shows that a character doesn’t have to be wildly emotional to be engaging as he demonstrates with his portrayal of folk singer Pete Seeger.
The same goes for Fanning’s work and that by Barbaro. Both women show wide ranges of emotions while maintaining a normal emotional framework. All the supporting players serve as emotional props for the flatness that Chalamet could never overcome.
“Mufasa: The Lion King” Grade C-: Rafiki decides to tell the story of how Mufasa (voiced by Aaron Pierre, Braelyn Rankins) got to know Taka (Kelvin Harrison Jr., Theo Somolu), the lion who eventually would become known as Scar.
The film is visually stunning, from the diverse landscapes to the way the animals are presented in a photorealistic manner. Each scene is so masterfully presented that many scenes look more like a National Geographic special or one of the Walt Disney wildlife films that were popular in the mid-20th Century than an animated offering.
Taking the prequel approach comes across less like trying to expand the “Lion King” universe and more like a way for the studio to make a few more dollars from a property they already own.
“Companion” Grade B+: This film about a robot companion that becomes violent is not like the 2023 horror film “M3GAN” because in that case there was never any doubt that the killer doll was the villain. Iris starts out as the bad guy but as her programming is revealed, she takes on more and more human characteristics such as self-preservation and aggression.
All the familiar elements at the beginning take on a fresh approach. Thatcher’s work is so good that the 180-degree swing never seems forced. She manages to make the character appear to be sweet and vulnerable and then switch to the reason to fear going into the woods. Her language skills are also sharp.
Give Hancock credit in that his script offers logical explanations of how and why Iris can adapt. A lesser film would have just assumed the audience would just accept her abilities.
“Love Hurts” Grade D+: Except for action sequence that once were only the work of Jackie Chan and bloody fights that would give John Wick pause, “Love Hurts” fails to be a twisted Valentine’s Day tale, an intriguing romance or the kind of non-stop action that would make Quentin Tarantino smile. It is just a painful example of what happens when hype gets in the way of smart thinking.
To be fair, all the bad writing is heartbreaking. There is an attempt at a plot regarding some stolen money but by the time the finale rolls around none of it matters. The only thing that drives this movie are the action scenes.
“Flight Risk” Grade C-: “Flight Risk” is not “plane” awful, it just never gains enough “attitude” to make it interesting.
This high-flying tale of an Air Marshall (Michelle Dockery), a captured fugitive (Topher Grace) and a maniacal killer (Mark Wahlberg) has the kind of action and unrealistic banter that would be good enough for an episode of a TV show such as “9-1-1” or “Chicago Fire.” It doesn’t hold up as a feature film.
Wahlberg’s efforts to make Darryl as evil as possible included an endless string of offensive sexual comments. He just doesn’t have the acting skills to make the dialogue work.
