(NEXSTAR) – Amid increasing outrage over proposed changes to Social Security benefit access, staff reduction and recent website outages, some may be monitoring their payments with a little extra scrutiny in April. The Social Security Administration (SSA) said Tuesday that it is investigating the root cause of online outages that have affected the “my Social Security” portal where recipients access their benefits. Notably, individuals who receive Supplemental Security Income, including disabled seniors and low-income adults and children, have reported receiving a notice that said they were “not receiving benefits.” The agency said that notice was a mistake. Roughly 7.4 million seniors, adults and children receive SSI benefits, according to an internal 2023 report. It is unclear how many people received the mistaken message on their portal. April Social Security payment schedule For those who want to monitor their payments closely this month, or just need a good way to structure their budget, the regular Social Security retirement benefit schedule for 2025 and 2026 can be found online. The SSA staggers retirement payments by birth date, so the breakdown will be as follows: Wednesday, April 9: Birth dates between first and 10th Wednesday, April 16: Birth dates between the 11th and 20th Wednesday, April 23: Birth dates between the 21st and 31st Supplemental Security Income beneficiaries were slated to receive their payment on Tuesday, April 1. The following month there will be two SSI payments, on Thursday, May 1 and Friday, May 30. Is Social Security money going to ‘millions’ of people listed as old as 149? The SSA recommends that beneficiaries who don't receive a payment on their due date first contact their bank or financial institution to see if there was a delay. If not, the SSA recommends calling 1-800-772-1213 or contacting a local Social Security office. SSA backtracks on some ID requirements In March, the SSA announced a plan that would require millions of recipients and applicants to authenticate their identities in person or online, instead of by phone, before making requests such as benefit claims or changes to direct deposit information. The Trump administration claims that the measure is necessary to combat fraud. News of the change came as Elon Musk's Department of Government Efficiency listed 47 offices in 18 states slated for closure. The SSA has since denied that it will be permanently closing the offices, and also partially backed off its proposed ID requirements. Trump, Musk fuel fears of Social Security cuts with ‘fraud’ talk “We have listened to our customers, Congress, advocates, and others, and we are updating our policy to provide better customer service to the country’s most vulnerable populations,” said Lee Dudek, SSA’s acting commissioner of Social Security in a statement. The Social Security Administration on Wednesday said that people applying for Social Security Disability Insurance, Medicare, or Supplemental Security Income who are not able to use agency’s online portal, can complete their claim entirely over the phone instead of in person. Other SSA applicants will still be required to verify their identities at a field office.
