Officials urge preparation ahead of severe storms in Kentucky

FRANKFORT, Ky. (ABC 36 NEWS NOW) — The ABC 36 Storm Team is tracking severe storms and heavy rain expected to arrive late Wednesday night, prompting flood watches across Kentucky.
Emergency management officials are urging residents to prepare now by having an emergency kit, staying informed, an
d creating an evacuation plan.
“So now’s the time to make that plan, have those escape plans in route, and know what your routes are. Have your weather radio to know, make sure you have a charged phone ready to get their alerts for the severe weather,“ said Eric Gibson, Director of Kentucky Emergency Management.
For those in flood-prone areas, experts stress the importance of knowing when to evacuate, especially for those still recovering from February’s historic flooding.
“If they were flooded in the storm back in February they’re still in this disaster recovery process—we’re working with them to get their registrations done, do what we can to put them back to normal—and they may be in the same area that can be flooded again. So we want them to be weather aware, use precaution, go ahead and take those emergency steps now to know what your plan is,” Gibson said.
Kentucky Emergency Management reports that 133 families are still in emergency shelters following February’s flooding.
“My heart goes out to those that have been impacted by that storm, and they’re very likely to have additional damages from this because they do live in those low-lying areas where the higher potential for flooding is,” Gibson added.
Officials also remind residents to follow the “Turn Around, Don’t Drown” warning to avoid driving through flooded roads.
