Spring construction starting back up across Kansas
Mar 31, 2025
WICHITA, Kan. (KSNW) - Temperatures across the state are going up and so are the orange cones.
Construction is starting up again as spring kicks off. Travel times for some commuters will be slowed, which can be frustrating, but county and state officials assure drivers the trade-off is worth it.
"Nobody likes to see the orange cones come out, and we definitely understand that," Lynn Packer, Sedgwick County director of Public Works/Engineer said. "They mean things are going to go a little slower for your commute, getting to your destination, but at the same time, they're necessary."
Some major county projects include bridges on 375th Street West and 391st Street West near Cheney Reservoir. Others will be primarily concentrated in northern Sedgwick County.
"It's the small crack sealing, the thin overlays on the roads that we do each year," Packer said.

Closer to the Wichita metro, the Kansas Department of Transportation will resume repair work on Kellogg between Webb and Hillside on Sunday.
"It's a pretty big artery through Wichita," J.B. Wilson, KDOT public information officer for the Wichita metro area, said. "We started that in the fall of 2024, and now we are finishing it in 2025 because of the winter weather conditions, we don't want those patches to pop."
Officials hope these projects will be completed by mid-summer.
