ALLENTOWN – Charley Wojtowicz has been on the short side of these Allentown and Lawrenceville battles in the past, but the Redbird senior defender made sure the present was a lot better.
Allentown, which had dropped six straight to the Big Red, including the last three finals of the now defunct Mercer County Tournament, jumped ahead early and held off one of those late Lawrenceville rallies to snap the skid.
Getting some key stops down the stretch, the Redbirds doubled up the Big Red, 10-5, 0n a beautiful lacrosse Saturday on the turf in Allentown.
“I realize this is just one game in March, but I’m so happy for this group,’’ said Allentown coach Justin Schmid. “We were very disciplined today and I believe it’s the togetherness that is driving us.’’
Allentown (3-1) has played a difficult early schedule, with a game in Florida and once it landed back in Jersey, it played Westfield and Trinity Hall.
Marleigh White, who had a huge interception late, led the Redbirds with three goals, Delaney Nolan and Addison Wagner each caged two goals, Mya Lourenco, Hayden Raff and Madison Sullivan each had one.
Lourenco added three assists.
Megan Conroy had 11 saves for the Redbirds.
“This game means a lot,’’ said Wojtowicz. “Our team is so close and it took a lot of time and effort to get it done because they are a great team. We gave it our all and as many times as we’ve lost in the past this is unreal. It feels amazing.’’
Allentown came out and claimed a 5-2 lead at the half and breezed through the third, holding a 7-2 advantage into the fourth.
But, that run everyone knew was coming, saw the Big Red (2-1) spot the Redbirds an early fourth-period goal and then scored three straight to make it 8-5 with 6:04 left in the game.
But, the Redbirds made the plays they had to and finished with a pair of goals.
Lawrenceville was led by Lexie Koch with three goals, Mia Kincade and Dani Caldwell each had single tallies.
Mira Trappe had 11 saves for the Big Red.
“We got a little nervous when they made that run and everyone of defense was playing so hard,’’ said Wojtowicz. “We knew we had to keep our minds clear and we knew what we had to do to get it done.’’
The three straight goals showed the capability of the Big Red, who were hit hard by graduation.
“I have a ton of respect for Allentown and they challenged us for the first time this year,’’ said Lawrenceville’s first-year coach Aly Dowey. “I wish it went the other way, but there was a ton learned from this. My second grade coach used to say, ‘win the draw, rule the world.’’
The draw belonged to the Redbirds’ White and Sullivan and it was what allowed them to enjoy a six-goal lead.
It’s took a few years, and now Allentown can enjoy a win over Lawrenceville.
