DENVER (KDVR) — Don't worry, Buffs fans, Deion "Prime" Sanders has extended his contract as head coach for the next four years.
On Friday, the University of Colorado Boulder Athletics said Sanders' contract as the head coach of the football team has been extended through the 2029 season.
Acc
ording to the university, Sanders' extension increases his yearly base salary to $10 million in 2025, making him the highest-paid football coach in the Big 12 and among the top 10 highest-paid head football coaches in the country.
Sanders put CU Boulder football back on the map after signing on as head coach in 2022. In his past two seasons, he turned a 1-11 team in the 2022-23 season into a nationally known, bowl-eligible team. In the 2024-25 season, his team finished 9-4 overall and just missed out on the Big 12 Championship.
"The Buffaloes under Coach Prime are also one of the most-watched teams in sports, attracting over 54 million viewers throughout the 2024 season, including 8 million who tuned in to watch CU take on BYU in the Alamo Bowl, the highest viewership in the 32-year history of the event," said CU Athletics in a press release.

After his quarterback son, Shedeur Sanders and Heisman winner, Travis Hunter, left CU Boulder with dreams of the NFL, there was speculation that Coach Prime could leave too. At the end of 2024, there was talk that he could take a coaching job with the Dallas Cowboys, however, Sanders made it clear that he wants to stay in Boulder.
CU Athletic Director Rick George officially crushed any lingering suspicions with his Friday announcement.
“Coach Prime has revolutionized college football and in doing so, has restored CU football to our rightful place as a national power,” said George in a press release. “This extension not only recognizes Coach’s incredible accomplishments transforming our program on and off the field, it keeps him in Boulder to compete for conference and national championships in the years to come.”
Sanders emphasized George's statement and even joked that he is looking to plant his roots further with a home with acreage.
"I’m excited for the opportunity to continue building something special here at Colorado,” said Coach Prime in a press release. “We’ve just scratched the surface of what this program can be. It’s not just about football; it’s about developing young men who are ready to take on the world. I’m committed to bringing greatness to this university, on and off the field. We’ve got work to do, and I wouldn’t want to be anywhere else but here, making history with these incredible players and this passionate fan base. Lastly, anybody got at least a five bedroom home with acreage for sale?” ...read more read less
