GREENSBORO, N.C. (WGHP) – A mother appeared in court on Monday following the death of her child.
Nasheata Lee is accused of falling asleep on top of her 2-month-old baby girl, who died as a result.
In court, FOX8 learned this all stemmed from an alleged alcohol addiction. Detectives said
they smelled alcohol on Lee when they arrived and that she has a drinking problem.
In court, two of her family members were there. They told FOX8 they don’t plan to bond her out because the drinking has to stop, and if she is locked up, she can’t drink.
Just after midnight on Sunday morning, there was a panicked call to 911 from Lee’s boyfriend. He found the baby under Lee with blood on the mattress.
He told detectives the couple got into a fight on Saturday. He left to cool off. When he came back home, he found the 2-month-old dead underneath her mom.
In court, FOX8 learned there was also a 2-year-old at home during the incident and that Lee has other children not in her custody.
Lee is charged with one count of negligent child abuse causing serious injury, but there could be more charges or upgraded charges in the future.
The judge decided to raise the bond from the initial $10,000 up to a $25,000 secured bond.
Detectives are still waiting for an official autopsy to confirm the cause of death of the baby. If convicted, Lee could face up to seven years in prison.
She is scheduled to be back in court in June. ...read more read less
