VTA bus service resumes Friday after judge’s order halts strike

(KRON) -- Santa Clara Valley Transit Authority (VTA) bus service is set to resume Friday after a nearly three-week-old strike was brought to an end Wednesday. VTA workers with the Amalgamated Transit Union (ATU) Local 265 were on strike for 17 days in seek of increased pay and benefits.

y, a Santa Clara County Superior Court judge ordered an end to the strike, citing a no-strike ordinance clause in the union's contract with the VTA. The judge's injunction came after the ATU had rejected the VTA's latest offer on Monday of an 11 percent raise over the next three years.

Eighty-three percent of the union voted against accepting the VTA's offer. The union is asking for an 18 percent raise over three years. The VTA, however, says that would force the agency to make cuts in jobs and service.
Despite that, workers reported to work Thursday with bus service set to restart on Friday after vehicle and safety inspections are completed. Light rail service will take slightly longer to resume, according to the VTA, with inspections of tracks and overhead lines along the rail's 42-mile system required.
