(COLORADO SPRINGS) -- Chewy, Cheyenne Mountain Zoo's Amur tiger, celebrates his tenth birthday this April.
"We've gotten to see him grow from a small tiger that was really rambunctious and loved to have a bubble bath, to the more kind of distinguished gentleman that he is now," said Basia Dann w
ith the Cheyenne Mountain Zoo. Chewy eats about ten pounds of food every day, from chicken and fish to beef and venison. Native to East Russia, Amur Tigers, like Chewy, prefer the cold. "They love the cold in the wintertime. He absolutely loves to run and slide in the snow. He loves to just lay out in the snow and get completely covered by it."
"A tiger has somewhere around 100 stripes. And if you were to shave a tiger completely, their stripes are on their skin, so they would still be striped." Dann continued, detailing the unique aspect of tigers. "And each tiger has its own set of stripes, like our fingerprints."Currently, it's estimated that only 500-600 Amur Tigers exist in the wild. You can see Chewy every day at the zoo. Those who wish to do so during a 21-and-up event should consider buying tickets to Moonlight on the Mountain. Moonlight on the Mountain starts June 26th from 6 p.m.-9:30 p.m. Tickets tend to sell out, so booking in advance is best. ...read more read less
