A 73-year-old rural Lancaster County woman was on he
r computer when an Apple security alert popped up on the screen, telling her to call Apple Support. Lancaster County Chief Deputy Sheriff Ben Houchin says the scammer told the woman there were foreign hackers were going to connect her to a child porn ring and to stop it, she had to pay them $25,000.
Houchin says the woman went to her bank and took out $10,000 because the bank wouldn’t let her take the full amount. She then went to a Bitcoin ATM at a Lincoln business to make the deposit. Houchin said the woman realized something was wrong when the scammer told her to deposit the remaining $15,000 the next day.
She also happened to see a large sign near the ATM machine warning people about frauds. It’s unclear if the money can be retrieved. ...read more read less
