Marinette County Board reviews Pike River agreement, delays termination vote

MARINETTE COUNTY, Wis. (WFRV) – The Marinette County Board considered a resolution Tuesday to terminate an agreement with the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (DNR) regarding the Pike River.
The Pike River is one of five rivers in Wisconsin with a Wild River designation, and some resid
ents have expressed concerns that ending the agreement could lead to logging along the river.

Officials say the primary concern is that the existing agreement, which dates back to 1991, is outdated.

"Forest management is a significant economic driver, especially across the Northwoods, so timber production is always an important consideration, but so are aesthetics and recreational uses. We're really trying to strike a balance between those multiple uses of the land," said Ryan Severson, DNR Northeast District forestry leader.
Rather than voting on termination, the board decided to refer the matter back to the committee to develop a new plan for the Pike River. ...read more read less
