The U.S. women’s national soccer team is coming to SoFi Stadium next month and Alyssa Thompson will be there.
Thompson was one of the 23 players called into the camp by USWNT coach Emma Hayes for a pair of games against Brazil.
The USWNT will first face Brazil on April 5 at SoFi Stadium (2 p.m.) i
n the first women’s soccer game to be played in the Inglewood site, and then head north to San Jose’s PayPal Park for an April 8 game (7:30 p.m.).
The USWNT defeated Brazil 1-0 in the gold-medal game in the Paris Olympics.
“I’m really excited to play here (SoFi Stadiuim),” Thompson said Sunday while attending the CONCACAF Nations League final. “It’s the biggest stadium I’ve been in and it’s such like a grand stadium, so I’m really excited and being in L.A., obviously, and play in front of my friends and family.”
Thompson has made 15 national team appearances. With the absences of Sophia Smith-Wilson and Mallory Swanson, Thompson could see herself moving up the depth chart at forward with the national team. Thompson said Angel City teammate Christen Press is helping her prepare for the club and national team balance
“She’s definitely my mentor,” Thompson said of Press. “I feel like she’s definitely been helping me a lot. She just wants me overall to be the best player I can be and to just be ready for both.”
The younger Thompson sister, Gisele, will be in a U-23 camp, which will train with the senior team. She and Alyssa made becoming the third sister duo to be called into a senior national team together in preparation for the SheBelieves Cup and they became the second sister pairing to start on a national team.
“I always say this, but we’ve always dreamed about doing this together,” Gisele said. “Being able to play in L.A., in front of our friends and family, is such an amazing experience. The crowd is so supportive of us and shows up every time we play, so I think being able to play together, you can see the connection on the field and off the field. It feels so much more like home, I can be myself when I’m playing with her (Alyssa).”
Angel City goalkeeper Angelina Anderson was called in as a training player. Anderson received her first call-up in January.
