GREEN BAY, Wis. (WFRV) - Dogs labeled 'Benchwarmers' through the Wisconsin Humane Society have been available for adoption for a while, and now, they're being placed in the 'starting lineup.'
Through the 'Benchwarmer Tryout' program, the Wisconsin Humane Society is allowing these dogs to be tried
out to see if a family is ready to adopt them and if they're a good fit.

Corey Viars, the media specialist for the Wisconsin Humane Society in Green Bay and Door County, said it's to help dogs who have lived in the shelter longer to find their 'furever' homes.
"We call it Benchwarmers because we're trying to get them back into the lineup, and a sports analogy would be great because there's nothing wrong with these guys," Viars said. "Some of these animals might need help to get out the door, and we're trying to get them home."
For up to seven days, you can take one of these benchwarmers home and learn more about them and how they may function and adjust in your own home.
If you're happy, you can complete the adoption fully online, or if not, you can bring them back to the Humane Society and they'll be made available again after benefitting from life outside the shelter.
These dogs are also available at discounted adoption fees and get more promotions, as they've been in the shelter far longer than other animals.
"Our normal stay for dogs is about 10 days, and around 6-7 days in is when we think about the benchwarmer process," Viars said. "We don't euthanize, so every animal has as long as it needs."
