BISMARCK, ND (KXNET) — More than $939,000 have been delivered so far to cattle ranchers and landowners affected by the October 2024 wildfires.
The money comes from the Out of the Ashes Wildfire Disaster Relief Fund, set up by the North Dakota Stockmen's Association and the North Dakota Stockmen
's Foundation. In addition to funding by the two organizations, contributions also came in from various groups and people in and out of the region.
The Out of the Ashes Wildfire Disaster Relief Fund grew to nearly $1 million – the single largest disaster relief program the Stockmen's Association and the Stockmen's Foundation have administered in their 17 years of partnership.
Winds gusting as high as 78 miles per hour, dry air and dry ground helped fuel massive wildfires in the northwest area of the state, taking out buildings, fences, stored feed, hay and livestock.
In the end, the fires consumed more than 120,000 acres.
Two people were killed and six were seriously injured in the fires.
