Investigation: Greece home explosion result of natural gas buildup; exact cause 'undetermined'

ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WROC) — Investigators have concluded natural gas build-up is to blame for an explosion at a home in Greece last November. But the exact cause is 'undetermined. '
In the early morning hours of November 11, 2024, a house on Stone Road exploded, launching the homeowner outside the
home. He was able to go back in and save the remaining occupants. All three occupants were sent to the hospital. All of them survived but with varying injuries.
According to a fire incident report from the Monroe County Sheriff's Office, the front plate of the home's natural gas meter was not in place. It said the screw holes for the plate were empty and did not contain any bolts. An undamaged cordless drill was also found.
Investigators were able to confirm that natural gas filled the open areas of the home. The report said the flow of gas could have been caused by the natural gas meter — if the front plate had fallen off.
The report also says that RG&E tested for leaks and deficiencies and could not find any other issues.
Investigators said the three residents did not admit to removing the bolts from the gas meter, and it is not believed to be malicious. However, they were unable to rule out that human involvement led to the explosion.
Due to unknown circumstances, the cause of the fire is still undetermined. ...read more read less
