Springfield Police to conduct "park and walk" sweep in this neighborhood

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) - The Springfield Police Department will be out in the area of Calhoun Park and Jefferson Avenue on Tuesday, conducting a "park and walk" ordinance sweep.

The department will
be warning residents to get violations cleaned up as soon as possible if they or any of their neighbors have them. They recently did a sweep around Commonwealth Avenue and found over 100 violations.

You can get fined for violating parking and code enforcement laws. Land maintenance is the responsibility of the homeowner. According to the City’s “Good Neighbor Handbook,” some code enforcement violations include:
Front Yards
Seventy-five percent of front yards in Residence A-1, A, and B zones and fifty percent of front yards in Residence C zones shall be planted with grass or landscaped and shall not be parked upon. Ticket: $50, $100 per day court fine.
Swimming Pools
In-ground swimming pools shall be enclosed by a fence at least four feet high. Above-ground swimming pools shall be enclosed by a fence at least four feet high or shall have a ladder that is removed when the pool is not in use. Ticket: $50, $100 per day court fine.
Fences
Fences in A-1 or A district cannot be constructed between the front line and in the front yard. Ticket: $50, $100 per day court fine. Front yard fences in residential zones B, B1, or C district cannot be higher than three feet. Ticket: $50, $100 per day court fine.
Signs
Signs for professional and home occupation in residential zones shall not exceed one square foot. Signs may not be placed in the public way without a permit. Ticket: $50, $100 per day court fine.
Overgrowth
Property must be kept free of grass, grass clippings, weeds, leaves, branches, or yard waste more than six inches high. Ticket: $100.
Refrigerators and Stoves
No refrigerator or stove should be stored or discarded outside. Ticket: $50.
