Wichita truck driver hauling oil derrick dies in crash

SHERIDAN COUNTY, Kan. (KSNW) — A driver was killed Wednesday afternoon in a crash involving a flatbed truck and an oil derrick on Kansas Highway 23 in Sheridan County.
According to the Kansas Highway Patrol, the crash happened at about 3 p.m., about 6 miles south of U.S. Highway 24 at Road 70
South.
The KHP says the truck, a 1979 Kenworth flatbed hauling an oil derrick, was traveling southbound when the driver attempted to turn right into a ditch to gain additional clearance. During the maneuver, the derrick made contact with overhead live power lines running along the north side of Road 70 South.

The contact with the power lines resulted in the driver being ejected from the vehicle. The KHP identified the driver as Shawn Kinder, 53, of Wichita. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
Shortly after the incident, a 48-year-old man from Natoma was able to enter the vehicle and apply the parking brake. He did not sustain any injuries.
The incident remains under investigation.
