'Definitely a catastrophic event': Fire destroys high school gym, damages classrooms

GEARY, Okla. (KFOR) — Classes for students in Geary were cancelled after the gym, along with several classrooms caught fire on Saturday night.
School superintendent Sean Buchanan said the fire was a complete disaster that sent shockwaves through the entire town.
"It's definitely a catastroph
ic event for sure," said Buchanan.
The massive destroyed a big part of Geary school history on Saturday night.
"We host the nation's oldest wrestling tournament here," said Buchanan. "The memories are just... it's unbelievable what the the sentimental value was here to some members of the community in that building."
Fire departments from nearby towns rushed to help.
Buchanan said the cafeteria was also destroyed.

Crews began tearing down the gym on Sunday afternoon.
"The remainder of the building experienced some pretty substantial smoke damage and water damage," said Buchanan. "A lot of history lost in this in this event for sure."
The damage is still under assessment, but Buchanan knows it is important to get students back in class.
"It's kind of that time of year, gearing up for state testing, gearing up for spring sports, gearing up for those types of things," said Buchanan.
The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
Buchanan said he's focused on making sure his students are able to successfully finish the year.
"This community is very much resilient," said Buchanan. "I think for us to get our kids back just as soon as we safely can for everyone and kind of restore like a sense of normalcy is going to be is going to be key."
