RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) -- The deadline for Governor Glenn Youngkin to approve, amend or veto bills passed in this year’s General Assembly is Monday, March 24.
Hundreds of bills passed in the General Assembly this year, some the governor has already approved, and some still awaiting their fate.
One of three bills Youngkin hasn't acted on yet is HB1716, which would establish a person's right to contraception. This would make it law for a voluntary patient who gives consent to get contraception.
Another is SB1181, which would make it a misdemeanor to import, sell, manufacture, purchase or transfer an assault firearm. If found guilty under the law if it were approved, you wouldn’t be able to buy any firearm for three years.
In addition, HB1712 would require the Department of Criminal Justice Services to train officers how to make arrest decisions for someone having a mental health crisis.
A bill already approved by the governor and made law is SB1288. This law allows anyone 16 or older to get their cosmetology or barbershop license. Those who are minors will have work as an apprentice, but they can now start their training at a younger age.
Another approved bill is HB1617, allowing an unhoused minor trying to get government documents like their birth certificate or license to not have to pay the fee that comes with it.
Lastly, SB1289 is a law that prohibits public schools from serving food that has dye in it. Seven color additives will no longer be allowed to be served in schools.
8News reached out to Powhatan County Public Schools to hear how this would impact the way they serve food. School officials said they’ve taken numerous measures over the past few years to align with legislation, and "as state and federal laws continue to evolve, we intend to be at the forefront of following regulatory changes."
