AUSTIN (KXAN) -- As the Texas Department of Transportation makes progress on the overhaul of Interstate 35 through Austin, new overnight lane closures are set to begin Monday, March 24. Starting overnight from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m., construction crews will close one northbound lane of I-35 from Oltorf Street to Holly Street. The I-35 Capital Express Central project will add two non-tolled high-occupancy vehicle lanes in each direction between SH 71/Ben White Boulevard on the south side of downtown Austin, to US 290 East on the north side of downtown Austin. The project will also remove the upper deck, and lower the roadway through downtown. There will eventually be new east-west bridges, like the one at MLK Jr. Boulevard, which is already under construction. Want to learn more about the project?
