NARRAGANSETT, R.I. (WPRI) -- Special Olympics Rhode Island (SORI) finished their annual Torch Run Super Plunge on Sunday, raising enough money to also reach a milestone the organization aimed to achieve. READ MORE: Special Olympics RI kicks off annual Torch Run Super Plunge Leading into this weekend's fundraiser, SORI hoped to set a record and reach $1 million total in money raised since first starting this event in 2011. During the weekend, over $200,000 was raised for the athletes, helping the organization achieve their goal. The event started at 1 p.m. on Saturday, where a team of 17 participants, including multiple police chiefs, ran into the cold water at Salty Brine State Beach every hour for 24 hours straight. At noon on Sunday, the last plunge saw a Torch Run. The Torch Run had hundreds of community members and athletes join the team of 17, according to SORI.
