‘I really loved her’: Loved ones host 4th annual food drive in honor of Lucia Bremer
Mar 23, 2025
HENRICO COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) -- On Saturday, March 22, vibrant yellow flowers, a beaming — shining — sun and many helping hands came out to honor another bright light in the Canterbury community. Loved ones held the fourth annual food drive in honor of Lucia Bremer -- a Henrico teenager fatally sh
ot by another teen in 2021.
"I think Lucia would be very pleased," said Angie Hutchison, Facility Manger for Canterbury Recreation. "I think Lucia would be right here with us. That was what kind of little girl she was."
Lucia's name means "light" -- organizers wanted Saturday's event to memorialize her bright spirit and captivating energy. The 13-year-old Quioccasin Middle Schooler's life was cut short in 2021 when then-14-year-old, David Williams, fatally shot her while she and her friend were walking home from soccer practice.
"We just want people to remember, not necessarily how Lucia died, but really how she lived," Hutchison said.
So the food drive was not about the past, but about letting Lucia's light shine today, tomorrow and in the future. It was the fourth time Huchinson and her team have partnered with Feedmore to host the drive.
Since the inaugural event, they've already seen a significant impact unfold -- all in Lucia's name.
"We've raised about $17,000," Hutchison smiled. "We've collected about 10,000 pounds of food in the past, plus today. And they say that every $10 you donate provides 40 meals, so that's a lot of meals. Plus all of the canned goods that we have actually collected."
Friends, strangers and community members of all ages joined together for hours to collect donations and share Lucia's story. Samantha Lionberger played soccer with the late teen for years.
"I really loved her," Lionberger reflected.
We're told Lucia was known as a talented teammate, a great friend and — as her name suggests — a shining light.
"I think it's a perfect way to show how she impacted the community," Lionberger explained. "By having other people come impact the community and help people."
