BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KGET) -- A man is dead after pickup truck struck him east of Bakersfield Friday morning. The crash happened around 6 a.m., on Weedpatch Highway near Kerrnita Road.
Highway patrol says a 56-year-old man was driving northbound on Weedpatch Highway when a pedestrian crossed the
street outside of a crosswalk.
"Upon our arrival, and upon emergency personnel arrival they pronounced the pedestrian deceased...he succumbed to his injuries," said CHP officer Jorge Toro.
The driver stopped and cooperated with law enforcement and towed his truck away from the scene. Highway patrol says that alcohol or drugs are not a factor in the crash. It was still dark outside when the crash happened.
There are no streetlights on this part of Weedpatch Highway.
"It's real dark….pitch dark," said Brenda Rummas, who has lived right off of Weedpatch Highway for 11 years.
The crash happened right outside her house. She did not see the crash but says this isn't the first time a car crash happened here on this stretch of Weedpatch.
"It's not safe, we need traffic lights and some streetlights to light this up," said Rummas.
Rummas wants traffic lights up on Kerrnita and Redbank roads.
"I would like traffic lights up on Kerrnita and Redbank, and this road over here," she said.
Rummas wants someone to step in and start implementing traffic safety.
"I wish the government makes this road safer for people," said Rummas.
