Small-ball for the win. Coming off an exciting win versus the New York Knicks, the Spurs faced the Philadelphia 76ers at home. Both teams are dealing with season-ending injuries and elected to go small at the center positions. The first quarter wa
s a back-and-forth race, and the Spurs had a two-point lead going into the second. The Spurs then outscored Philly 36-26, and took a twelve-point lead into halftime. However, Philly responded with a 43-point third quarter and held a four-point lead going into the fourth. In the fourth, the Spurs fell behind as much as eight but rallied back thanks to hustle plays from Keldon Johnson and Jeremy Sochan. After Quentin Grimes hit a three with 1:16 left, the Spurs had a one-point lead. Harrison Barnes hit a dagger three from the corner with 53 seconds left. The Spurs ultimately won 128-120.
Jeremy Sochan dropped a team-high 23 points on an efficient 11 of 17 shooting. He also dropped nine rebounds and two assists. Jeremy started at center for the second straight game and beating his opponents on cuts to the basket and on pick and rolls. It seems Mitch Johnson is going to ride out this small ball lineup until the end of the season.

Stephon Castle dropped a double-double: 17 points and a career-high 14 assists. He also dropped five rebounds, three steals, and a block. Steph played the floor general role as Chris Paul played more as the shooting guard. This only improves Steph’s potential as a combo guard. ROTY has to be locked up at this point.
DROPPIN’ DIMES! Here’s all of Steph’s 14 assists!

Devin Vassell had a solid game with 20 points, seven assists, five rebounds, and three steals. Dev continues to play like the sneaky two-way player we’ve come to expect this season. He wasn’t only getting buckets either, he was also playmaking!

Keldon Johnson dropped 18 points, five rebounds, three assists, three steals, and two blocks. Keldon brought much-needed energy that sparked a Spurs comeback in the fourth. He continues his hot streak since the ASB. Big Body is a spark plug.

Chris Paul was on fire from three: Six of seven for 18 points. He also dropped four rebounds, three assists, and a block. CP3 was draining threes from different spots on the court, including the Frost Bank Center logo! He had to have been feeling what Mamu felt like versus the Knicks.

This was a great team win. After leading by double digits in the second and third, it looked like the game was wrapped up. Even after the Spurs lost focus, they buckled down in clutch time and learned from their defensive lapses. This young core is shining bright, and their light is only getting brighter.
