The latest film production coming to New Mexico highlights cultural heritage

SANTA FE, N.M. (KRQE) — A movie navigating family grief, water preservation, and cultural heritage will be filmed in a small northern New Mexico town, the state film office announced Thursday.

"The Way We Carry Water," created
by Director Makaio Frazier and produced by Diego Joaquin Lopez as well as Fred Mady III, is set to be filmed in Alcalde. Twelve crew members and four principal actors will be employed for the production. Some of the cast includes Drew Lopez, Marcos Martinez, and Diego Lopez.
The film follows Marcos, a young man confronting the loss of his grandfather. Alongside that grief, Marcos is striving to preserve his family's acequia. All in all, the movie aims to paint of a portrait of "resilience and the enduring legacy of tradition."
“As a filmmaker from northern New Mexico, ‘The Way We Carry Water’ is a deeply personal story that honors the land, culture, and traditions that have shaped my life,” Frazier said. “This film celebrates the acequia heritage that has sustained our communities for generations, showcasing the beauty and resilience of our region on screen.”
The movie is scheduled to be filmed through June. Alcalde is just under 100 miles from Albuquerque. ...read more read less
