SAN DIEGO (FOX 5/KUSI) — Residents and State Route 79 motorists in the Descanso area may see and smell smoke Wednesday, according to officials with the Cleveland National Forest.
Fire crews will be conducti
ng a two-acre prescribed burn at the Descanso Fire Station, which is located off Viejas Grade Road. This means smoke may be visible in the surrounding area throughout the day. A map of the burn area can be seen below.

As part of the Vegetation Management Program, prescribed fires are intended to “address wildland fire fuel hazards and other resource management issues on State Responsibility Area lands,” as explained by Cal Fire.
Ultimately, prescribed burns are meant to help in reducing the number and intensity of damaging wildfires, while also increasing public safety and decreasing the risk to firefighters. ...read more read less
