LEXINGTON, Ky. (ABC 36 NEWS NOW) — Protestors gathered outside the Hyatt in downtown Lexington Wednesday morning to protest Congressman Andy Barr, President Donald Trump and DOGE.
“I want Andy Barr to care more about me and all of us regular people than he does about the Trump agenda,” protes
tor Deborah Gerth said.
People who attended the protest say they’re disappointed in the Trump Administration’s actions, specifically those coming from the Department of Government Efficiency.
“DOGE is doing things that are illegal and unconstitutional,” Gerth said.
While protestors stood outside the hotel, Barr was showing his support for DOGE and Elon Musk inside the hotel.
“The authority that Musk has is the same as any other advisor to a president we’ve had,” Barr said. “If you consider the fact that DOGE is overseeing hundreds and thousands of unelected officials in the executive branch, it’s very rich to criticize the fact that he’s unelected.”
Outside the hotel, cars drove past honking, some in support and others against the messages the protestors shared on their posters.
“This is great today; this is more than we had hoped for honestly. Everybody’s engaged, the traffic’s engaged,” protestor Craig Blair said.
Congressman Barr responded to the protests.
“We are living in a vibrant democracy and 77 million Americans voted for this new administration,” he said. “I would argue to my constituents that are protesting: that is democracy.”
Many people on the streets, sharing their emotions.
“I am here today because I feel desperate, I feel like this is all we have,” protestor Pam Maley said.
Protestors say they’re frustrated by the lack of communication they have with Barr.
“Regular people need to talk to him too and so it’s very much about democracy and having our lawmakers listen to us and respond to us,” Gerth said.
