Indiana University to open building in Washington D.C.
Mar 18, 2025
WASHINGTON (WISH) — Indiana University acquired a building in the nation’s capital, school leaders announced Tuesday. The move is to boost IU’s national presence and provide more opportunities for students.
The eight-story building in the Dupont Circle neighborhood is surrounded by emba
ssies and national headquarters. The IU Foundation bought it on behalf of the university.
IU President Pamela Whitten says the purchase represents a major step forward.
“It will open new doors for our students by making new and potentially life-changing experiences available,” Whitten said in a press release. “It will create new opportunities for us to highlight IU innovation for national and international policymakers, extending the impact of that research. Students and faculty across disciplines and interest areas will benefit from this important investment, just as the country and the world will benefit from IU’s prominent leadership.”
The building includes space for academic programs, business operations, and housing for students. Currently, there are no housing services for students enrolled in IU’s Washington-based programs.
The university also plans to use the building to host speakers and events to highlight IU’s research.
Students across the university system will be able to use the new facility for various programs.
IU already has several curriculums based in the nation’s capital. They include leadership programing through the Paul H. O’Neill School of Public and Environmental Affairs and the Hamilton Lugar School of Global and International Studies
It’s been a years-long process to get the building. IU said it started looking for a building in D.C. since 2021, shortly after Whitten took over as president.
IU’s new facility is expected to open early 2026 pending board approval of a lease between the school and the foundation.
