FALL RIVER, Mass. (WPRI) — Firefighters rushed to a Fall River home on Monday afternoon near the intersection of Locust and Rock streets.
Witnesses on the scene said they first saw flames coming out of the side of a large gray house.
By the time a 12 News crew arrived, all that was visible
was smoke, which appeared to get gradually thicker and darker until the flames reappeared.
The Fall River Historic Commission lists the house at 386-388 Locust Street as a Gothic Revival home built circa 1848, called the Albert S. Clark House. It's included on the National Register of Historic Places as part of Fall River's Highlands Historical District.
The house's age and its wood frame, as well as the style of the architecture, give flames ample space to intensify, the Fall River fire chief told 12 News.
Neighbors tell 12 News the house is a multi-family home. The fire chief says all residents of the home made it out, but said pets living there may still be trapped inside.
The area around the house is completely closed as crews continue to battle the fire. The cause is still under investigation.
