We made it through another big week of news and cold weather, Chicago.
President Donald Trump took the oath of office on Monday for a second time and immediately got to work issuing a slew of executive orders. One order to stop birthright citizenship was blocked by a Seattle judge after more than 15 states, including Illinois, filed a lawsuit against the directive.
Trump’s statements and executive orders regarding immigration had many Chicagoans on guard this week, and churches, schools and politicians such as Mayor Brandon Johnson and Gov. JB Pritzker promised to protect the state’s and city’s immigrants. Congress also passed the Laken Riley Act, which requires unauthorized migrants accused of theft and violent crimes be detained.
Elsewhere in Chicago, attorneys in Michael Madigan’s trial began making their closing arguments. The Tribune reported that the Housing Authority of Cook County spent money meant for public and subsidized housing on trips to Six Flags. Tiffany Henyard, who has been the subject of controversy after controversy in the Southland, will not appear on the ballot for Thornton Township supervisor.
In the world of sports, Ohio State defeated Notre Dame for the college football title. The Bears hired a new head coach, Ben Johnson, who previously served as the Lions offensive coordinator. Plus, Cubs legend Sammy Sosa made an appearance at the Cubs Convention.
Well, those are the headlines. Now for the fun stuff! Here’s the latest installment of the Tribune’s Quotes of the Week quiz — this time with excerpts and utterances from the week spanning Jan. 19-25.
