Southern Living says Hilton Head beach has bluest water in S.C.

HILTON HEAD, S.C. (WSAV) -- Southern Living magazine, the ultimate insiders' guide to Southern culture, says Coligny Beach on Hilton Head Island has the bluest waters.
Open and free to the public, Coligny Beach is one of the most popular on Hilton Head.
The sand is bright white, soft and very fine. The water is shallow, especially at low tide. Both of these qualities factor into the blue water. Calmer waters mean less sea life, sand and other material to cloud things, giving the water a sparkling blue appearance.
Science plays a part in the phenomenon too. Southern Living says, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), when light passes through water, it absorbs colors in the red part of the light spectrum. This leaves colors on the blue end of the color spectrum.
In addition to Coligny Beach's blue water, the area is popular for other amenities as well. You can sit in a gazebo or catch a breeze in a swing. Sit by a synchronized jet in a rocking chair. Enjoy outdoor showers (to clean off sand) and free parking.
