MUNCIE, Ind. — The Muncie Police Department arrested a 17-year-old male early Friday morning after a shooting left an 18-year-old in critical condition. According to a press release from MPD, at around 3:12 a.m., a patrol Sergeant observed a vehicle with no headlights on traveling at a high rate of speed. It was heading west on University Ave. at Reserve St. MPD wrote that the Sergeant then conducted a traffic stop, in which some of the vehicle's occupants stated the front passenger had been shot. This was reported to be an 18-year-old male, who was transported to an area hospital in critical condition. After investigating, MPD said that they found there were five male occupants in the vehicle: four being 18 years old and one being 17. That 17-year-old was sitting in the backseat, handling a gun. MPD said the teen discharged the gun and injured the front passenger. He has since been detained. Further details, including what led up to the shooting, have not yet been provided.
