Every so often, I’m coming here with a recommendation on how to spend your money. Today is one of those days. If you don’t have Apple TV+ — it’s $9.99 a month, though I think you might be able to find a three-month free deal — go get it. Then, start watching “Severance.” There. That’s it. That’s the recommendation. For starters, know this — one of the stars, Zach Cherry, is A) hilarious, B) born in Trenton, and C) graduated from Princeton Day School. In short: He’s one of us, and he deserves all the love we can bestow upon him. Then there’s this: If you like puzzle-box shows, this is the best one since “Lost.” (And yes, I know, many of you were not happy with the way “Lost” ended, but let’s set that aside for the moment.) The show debuted three years ago, and was a low-key hit for Apple TV+. People were talking about it. It was good, and got better as the nine episodes played out. I’ll nutshell for you without giving anything away: Adam Scott stars as Mark Scout, a guy who elects to undergo a procedure called “severance.” When you’re at work, you have no memory of your outside life. When you’re outside of work, you have no memory of what you do at work. Different aspects of the same person, living completely separate lives. It’s brilliant. The writing, acting, directing, set design, music, everything — it works on every level. The first episode of Season 2 dropped last Friday, and they will release a new episode every Friday for the next nine weeks. It’s an awesome, awesome, awesome show. But what makes it even better is the theorizing. Believe me, there is theorizing. And that’s where the real fun lies. I watched the first episode of the second season the other night when it came out. Then I read the recaps. Then I looked at the Reddit boards. Then I listened to a few podcasts. Then I watched the episode again. Basically, this hour-long show — it also stars John Turturro, Christopher Walken, Britt Lower, Patricia Arquette, and the undisputed breakout star of the show, Tramell Tillman — becomes an hours-long rabbit hole of a game you can play all week between episodes. And yes, I said “between episodes.” Thank goodness the powers-that-be at Apple TV realized this is not a show you drop all at once. That would legit take so much of the fun out of it. Having that week between episodes allows for the deep dives, the crazy theories, the watercooler talk. I cannot stress this enough: If you enjoy having your mind messed with — and done in a super stylish, weird-ass, never-before-seen kind of way — get Apple TV+ and start watching this show. Oh, and if any of you know Zach Cherry, let him know I wrote this and I want to interview him. Tell him I’ll throw in a few finger traps. He’ll know what I’m talking about.
