Govs drop both games to Brandon Valley
Jan 23, 2025
The Pierre Govs girls hosted the number two team in Class AA as the Brandon Valley Lynx came to town. The final score finished up with the Govs losing 59-43, but the game was much closer than the final score would have you believe. Up until the final few minutes, this was a back-and-forth affair with both teams trading baskets. The Govs got out to an early 15-14 lead after quarter number one, and the Lynx matched that by taking a two-point lead into the half. The Govs bounced back nicely in the third, regaining the lead 37-36 into the final quarter. But the Lynx offense found a rhythm late and was able to build a comfortable cushion on the back of a couple steals that led to buckets, along with getting to the free throw line.
For the Govs, it wasn’t the eye-popping night offensively that you are used to seeing on the stat sheet with Lennix DuPris scoring 13 and Emery Larson scoring 14. But the Govs were able to stay tough in this game thanks to their defense. The Baumann Lumber player of the game was awarded to Lynx star Gracie Salter who dominated both ends of the floor and finished with 20 points.
The Govs settle back to .500 at 4-4, and will be off for the weekend. However, the rubber meets the road again Tuesday as they welcome in a 7-2 Aberdeen Central on Tuesday and follow that up with a game on the road against unbeaten O’Gorman.
Despite winning six straight and seven of their first eight games, Brandon Valley head boys basketball coach Craig Nelson still wanted to see a more consistent shooting effort from his team going forward. The Lynx gave him just that Thursday night as they shot better than 60 percent in a 68-57 win over the Pierre Governors. Brandon Valley built a 33-19 lead in the second quarter before Pierre trimmed the deficit to seven at halftime, 39-32. The Governors then trailed by only three at the third quarter break, 54-51, but the offense went quiet in the fourth, as the Lynx went on for their seventh straight win. Austin Dowd scored 16 points off the bench to lead a balanced attack in the win, while Dawson Getz paced Pierre with a game-high 19 in the loss. The Govs (3-6) head to Aberdeen Tuesday to tangle with the Golden Eagles.
