SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) - The deadline to get a Real ID in Massachusetts is fast approaching and according to the RMV many residents still need one. "We're seeing a lower adoption rate in Hampden County and we want to raise awareness to the residents here in this part of the state," said Registrar of Motor Vehicles, Colleen Ogilvie. Not only in Hampden County are we seeing low numbers for Real ID applications, but across the entire Commonwealth. According to the RMV, only 55 percent of drivers licenses and identification cards are Real-ID compliant. "It's a combination of people putting off things and they think they've seen the date change a couple of times. And it may change again, but we're not aware it will change again. So we want to make sure people are prepared," said Ogilvie. Those over the age of 18 will be required to have a Real ID when going onto domestic flights or entering certain federal facilities. People are encouraged to get a Real ID by April 1st, but will have until May 7th. This comes from a bill passed by Congress 20 years in the wake of 9/11 that set minimum security standards for drivers licenses and ID cards. Springfield resident Jeremih Cortez is looking to get his Real ID, "it's just better and easier to get around. I do a lot of traveling. I'm going to know how to stay out of the country soon. Me and my fiance are planning on having a honeymoon out of out of the country." The Real ID will have a star in the top right corner. If your ID is star-less you may want to start the process of getting a Real ID soon. When you head to your local RMV, you will need to provide documentation showing your full name, date of birth, Social Security number, and two proofs of address. The Springfield RMV is offering appointments on Saturdays. There are no appointments this Saturday, but there will be many other appointments available starting Saturday, February 1st. As soon as the Real ID requirement kicks in federal agencies like TSA won't accept state IDs that don't meet the standards. Once the deadline passes, if you do not have a REAL ID you will need to provide another form of identification like a U.S. passport or military ID, to board a plane.
