AGAWAM, Mass. (WWLP) - Massachusetts is experiencing a real blast of arctic air this week and the very frigid temperatures can lead to a homeowner's worst nightmare, frozen pipes. If your pipes freeze and burst you can end up with costly water damage in your home. Temperatures dropped down below zero this week and when it gets that cold your pipes can freeze and if they burst you can end up with quite a mess. Massachusetts temperatures reached coldest in years There are some precautions to take that can help prevent your pipes from freezing. Annalise St. Marie of Rocky's Ace Hardware in Agawam told 22News, "One of your best options is to put on the little noodle-looking things that wrap around the pipes it helps keep them a little bit warmer. You can also keep cabinets open to allow heat from the house to get in there around your pipes." There are some important things you can get to help keep your pipes from freezing. "A lot of the need has been for the spigot on the outside of your house they are little foam covers you can put over that as well from freezing in the winter," said St. Marie.You can also get things like pipe wrap insulation or tape and special heating cables. If your pipes freeze you can use a hair dryer or heating pad to thaw them. Never use a blowtorch or any kind of open flame. You risk starting a fire and then the pipe could also burst. It's also a good idea to let water drip or trickle from your faucets because it's harder for moving water to freeze.
