NORTH CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCBD)-- The Charleston International Airport has officially been cleared to resume operations after the airfield was shut down this week due to winter weather, and travelers at CHS are feeling some relief. Crews from joint base Charleston and Charleston International have been working through the week to clear runways blanketed with ice and snow. “Early yesterday morning, they were out in the airfield clearing. They stayed out all day long. They were back this morning and continued to clear, so it’s not like nothing is happening here, and I understand it can’t happen fast enough for the folks who need to get where they need to be,” said Spencer Pryor, the Deputy Executive Director and Chief Communications Officer, Charleston International Airport. Joint base Charleston shut down operations at the airfield Tuesday night due to unsafe conditions. Since then, airlines have canceled over 40 flights due to the winter weather, leaving travelers frustrated, but many said they understand why the decision was made.  “It is a bit frustrating, but this is also not normal for Charleston; I grew up here, so I know it’s not normal for us, so I’m sure they’re doing the best they can do, said Eugene Minson, a traveler. With a refreeze expected overnight, officials warn passengers that conditions are fluid and that they should be prepared for additional disruptions.SOT: Spencer Pryor: Deputy Executive Director and Chief Communications Officer, Charleston International Airport “We may have to do this again tomorrow. There may be a delay until the ice defrosts or starts melting. Again, it’s all about the traveler’s safety!  I wouldn’t want to be on an airplane with ice on the runway and sliding all over the place. Oh, God knows what could happen.” If you have a flight coming up, officials encourage you to download your airline’s app to stay updated with any changes.
