ORCHARD PARK, N.Y. (WIVB) -- A depleted defense doomed the Bills in last season's divisional playoff loss to the Chiefs. Buffalo has been remarkably healthy so far this postseason, but the injury report appears a bit more ominous going into Sunday's AFC championship game rematch in Kansas City. Safety Taylor Rapp did not practice Wednesday because of a hip injury that required him to be carted to the locker room during last week's divisional round victory against the Ravens. Two other defensive starters were limited participants in the walk-through session: cornerback Christian Benford in following the NFL's concussion protocol, and Matt Milano due to hamstring soreness. On the offensive side, left tackle Dion Dawkins missed Wednesday's practice due to illness. How to watch, stream and listen to the AFC championship game between the Bills and Chiefs Milano was among the key defenders who did not play against the Chiefs in the previous postseason meeting. He was out for the season with a broken leg. Starting middle linebacker Terrel Bernard sat out the 27-24 loss with an ankle injury, and cornerback Rasul Douglas played after hurting his knee. When the Bills beat the Chiefs 30-21 in Week 11 of this season, Milano had not yet returned from the torn biceps tendon that put him on injured reserve in the preseason. Milano has played in six of the past seven games since, but missed the Week 17 contest against the Patriots with a hamstring injury. Benford, who has been one of the Bills' most reliable defenders this season, missed the Week 9 win against the Dolphins because of a wrist injury. Being listed as a limited participant Wednesday could indicate he will be cleared to play Sunday. That was the case last week with running back Ray Davis, who was limited throughout the week and listed as questionable before playing against the Ravens. If Rapp is unable to play against the Chiefs, rookie safety Cole Bishop will start alongside Damar Hamlin in the secondary. Bishop, a second-round draft pick out of Utah, finished the divisional playoff game making three tackles, but the Ravens found some success passing downfield in the second half with Rapp out of the game. Coach Sean McDermott said veteran safety Micah Hyde has "a 1% chance" of being called up from the practice squad for the AFC championship game, after initialing state that Hyde would not play. Buffalo's offense will have three notable players back who missed the regular season game against the Chiefs: starting right tackle Spencer Brown, tight end Dalton Kincaid, and rookie receiver Keon Coleman. The Chiefs defense also has gotten healthier, with starting cornerback Jaylen Watson and edge rusher Charles Omenihu returning after being out the last time they played the Bills. *** Jonah Bronstein joined the WIVB squad in 2022 as a digital sports reporter.
