CHARLESTON COUNTY, S.C. (WCBD) – Charleston International Airport is working to clear its airfield after snow and sleet blanketed the ground Tuesday night and Wednesday morning.
Spencer Pryor, chief communications officer for Charleston County Aviation Authority, announced just before 11:30 p.m. Tuesday that the airfield and control tower were closed because of developing weather conditions.
Both remain closed as of 11 a.m. Wednesday, and operations are suspended.
“The airport’s operations team is in ongoing communication with Joint Base Charleston and the FAA control tower to receive updated information regarding the timeline for the airfield’s reopening,” said Pryor in an update.
Travelers should check with their individual airlines for flight status and updates as delays and cancellations are likely to continue because of snow and ice.
Airport police are monitoring road conditions near the airport and say travelers should use caution in the area. “The safety and well-being of passengers and staff remain the highest priority,” Pryor said.
