ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WROC) – Fire crews have cleared the massive Ovid block fire, which led to the destruction of multiple buildings. Buildings have collapsed as the fire continues to rip through the strip on Main Street. Buildings needed to be demolished following the massive fire last night in Ovid (Photo/Ovid Fire Department) Fire crews said none of the buildings involved in the fire were saved and all buildings from Big M to the Italian Kitchen were demolished. The old Barber Shop remains standing with some damage. According to the Ovid Fire Department, the area continues to see thick smoke. Drivers are urged to avoid Main Street from the library to the community bank. East Seneca Street is closed at The Coffee Shop and West Seneca is closed before the back parking lot. Fire crews are expected to return to the area at 9 a.m. Wednesday morning. NYSEG reported 200+ outages in the area though it is unconfirmed if the fire had anything to do with it. Neighbors on scene told News 8 they were worried about how they would stay warm with the power outages. A neighbor across the street from the Big M said they were there for 10 minutes before they witnessed it go up in flames. They emphasized how important the store is to the community. "It increases the stress level for everyone, but what's even more devastating is those who lost their homes in this fire on the coldest night of the year," the neighbor told News 8. "This is impactful, for everyone - this is where the community goes to shop." According to online reports, about 100 firefighters were on scene with help from several different county and out-of-county agencies, including some from Wayne. This is a developing story, check back later for more details.
