VALLEJO, Calif. (KRON) – More Bay Area schools are facing possible closures. On Tuesday, the Vallejo City Unified School District held a town hall to discuss the fate of eight of its schools.  Vallejo parents from several schools spoke out against the closures, saying it would disrupt their children's education and daily lives. Sharon Johnson says she specifically transferred her daughter to Mare Island Health and Fitness Academy because the school closest to their home wasn’t safe. Alameda County supervisors inching closer to pick for DA "It's near homeless encampments. There are drug dealers, prostitution all going around our home school,” she said.  Currently there are 19 schools in Vallejo serving only about 9,000 students. The schools that could be affected are: Federal Terrace Elementary Lincoln Elementary Loma Vista Environmental Science Academy Pennycook Elementary Solano Widenmann Leadership Academy Steffan Manor Elementary Vallejo Charter School Superintendent Ruben Aurelio says one of the reasons for closures is a decline in enrollment. "Vallejo itself has seen a significant decline of about 5,000 students in the past 10 years,” he said. “We always tell our parents attendance really matters because that's how we get funded – not by a moment but by actual daily attendance. Families have moved out, and we are feeling that pain point.” Last fall, a committee was formed tasked with making a plan to make budget reductions. So far, they’ve found ways to cut more than $4 million, but Aurelio says the district still needs to make $8 million worth of cuts.  "We are projected to be deficit spending in the next three years, so this is a really important step for us,” he said.  But another Mare Island parent says families shouldn’t be the ones having to make a sacrifice.   "It is very hard to live and raise a child in this city. We are all working parents. We are grateful for the island in making me feel safe that my kid is there while I'm working,” Eva Poom said.  The superintendent says feedback from this town hall will be part of the district’s consideration as they work to make a decision by the board of education meeting on Feb. 5.
