FRESNO, Calif. (KSEE/KGPE) - Just hours back in the Oval Office, President Donald Trump issued a memorandum calling on federal agencies to come up with a plan to send more water from the San Joaquin Delta to the Central Valley and southern California. In the memorandum titled "Putting People Over Fish: Stopping Radical Environmentalism to Provide Water to Southern California," President Trump directed the Secretary of Commerce and the Secretary of Interior to come up with a plan within the next 90 days to change regulations to help route more water from the San Joaquin Delta to the Central Valley and southern California. The president issued a similar order back in his first term but stalled after legal challenges by the state over environmental concerns. Valley Congressman Vince Fong says this move is proof that Trump is here to help California. “I mean, this is what President Trump is doing; he's taking action on day one, I mean, this issue is so important for him that on his on his first day after being sworn in as president, United States, he is taking action on California's water policy," said Fong. Democratic Valley Congressman Jim Costa says he believes the solution won't come with one action. “There's no one magic solution I think frankly hopefully we've learned some lessons and I think we need to work together,” said Costa. CEO of the Fresno County Farm Bureau Ryan Jacobsen says the current way of doing things is only hurting farmers. “What we are doing is currently not working we need to reexamine the system we understand we have to protect species at the same time we wanna see better water allocations so I'm hopeful we are going to see a more holistic approach than we have seen over the last few years," said Jacobsen. It's not clear whether the state intends to challenge this action by the memorandum.
