RIO RANCHO, N.M. (KRQE) – Brian Weems has helped turned around three high school soccer programs in the state. The New Mexico Runners now hope he can do the same for them. New Mexico's professional indoor soccer team has named the current Rio Grande head coach as its next head coach. Weems stepped into the role four games into the season. He is the second head coach in team history. Weems said that he will stay in his current role at Rio Grande. He also said that the school will accommodate his new schedule. "I've built three programs, and I know they're at the high school level, but at the same time, people are people and soccer is soccer," Weems said. "I believe I'm good with people, I believe I can get the most out of people to do what they need to do to succeed. i felt like it was a really, really good I would say challenge for me in my own life to say lets try and do this." As a coach, Weems has also spent time at Belen, where he took the Eagles to the state championship game, and Sandia, where he took the Matadors to the state semi-finals. He also served as the athletic director at Sandia. This past season with the Ravens, Weems guided Rio Grande to its first-ever distract championship. In his first game as head coach of the Runners, Weems and New Mexico fell 6-15 on the road against Wichita. His first home game will come on Sunday, January 26. The New Mexico Runners play in Major Arena Soccer League two. The team plays its home games at the Rio Rancho Events Center.
