Frigid temperatures, dangerous road conditions persist after historic snowfall
Jan 21, 2025
NEW ORLEANS (WGNO) — After a historic winter storm brought record-setting snowfall to the area, residents are urged to avoid travel overnight and into Wednesday.
Roads across the region remain dangerous due to snow and ice, and conditions are unlikely to improve until temperatures rise later in the week.
Temperatures will stay well below freezing overnight, with lows dipping into the lower 20s. Gusty north winds will make it feel even colder, so anyone venturing outdoors should bundle up and exercise caution.
Even with sunny skies forecast for Wednesday, high temperatures will only reach the low 30s, limiting snowmelt and keeping travel hazardous.
If you must drive, check road conditions before heading out and make sure you have an emergency kit in your vehicle. Officials recommend staying off the roads unless absolutely necessary.
Looking ahead, gradual warming will begin Thursday, but temperatures will stay below normal through the weekend. Highs will climb into the 40s by Friday and the lower 50s by Saturday. Rain chances return Sunday as a weather system moves through, bringing temperatures closer to the 60s.
Stay safe, and avoid driving on icy roads unless absolutely necessary. For those staying home, prepare for extreme cold and ensure your pets and pipes are protected from freezing temperatures.
