Navigating the cold with your car
INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — Preventative maintenance is key to keeping your car running in these frigid temperatures.
David Neves is the owner of Dave’s Mechanic Shop. He said car batteries that are a few years old are at risk of dying in this cold.
“There are multiple places that test batteries for free and make sure that the battery is no older than four or five years,” Neves said. “Past that, you run the risk of having no power in your vehicle.”
Neves said it is important to use the right oil in your car for the outside temperatures, use washer fluid with antifreeze, and even lubricate the window seals of the car with a silicone-based product.
“That will avoid the windows from sticking and gluing on the rails, and avoid the window regulators from breaking down,” Neves said.
Neves has been a mechanic for 14 years. When in doubt, he says, bring your car to a professional to have it looked at.
“Make sure everything is up to date,” Neves said. “Fluid. Tires. Batteries. Everything that is critical for the functioning of your vehicle should be checked.”
Neves also reminds everyone to make sure your anti-lock brake system works before taking a car out in icy conditions. This could help prevent an accident.
Also, do not forget to keep an eye on your tires. This cold weather can easily zap your tire pressure.
