ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WROC) – A Rochester Police officer was put on paid leave after allegations surfaced that he sexually abused and harassed someone in an off-duty incident, officers confirmed Tuesday evening. According to the Greece Police Department, Nicholas Romeo was arrested on Jan. 7 and charged with second-degree harassment and sexual abuse in the third degree. Officers said the arrest came as the result of a complaint filed around Halloween accusing Romeo of having unwanted sexual contact with another adult. Further details were not released. Rochester Police Department confirmed its officers became aware of the incident, which happened while Romeo was not on the clock as a police officer, back in early November. At that time, Chief David Smith ordered an internal investigation and suspended him from the police department Nov. 6. Captain Greg Bello told News 8 that Romeo had been an officer with the department since 2006 and remains on paid suspension at this time.
