WICHITA, Kan. (KSNW) - Wichita fire crews are on the scene of an apartment fire that left a person dead. The fire happened just after 2 p.m. at the Eastwood Apartments near Oliver and East Gibert Street. Upon arrival, crews with the Wichita Fire Department saw smoke and flames coming from the structure. Firefighters were able to get inside and found that the fire was contained in one apartment. Inside, they found one occupant in extremely critical condition. The person was taken to an area hospital, where they died from their injuries. The fire was knocked down quickly. "Fire was knocked down within 10 minutes, and then it was just contending with what we have from the roof and everything," said Wichita Batallion Chief Terry Gresham. "Right now, the guys are working on an extension on the roof. This is a flat roof, so the fire kinda came up with foam on the top, and it spread, and so they're searching for it." The whole building was evacuated, and all other apartments were searched and given the all-clear. The cause of the fire is still under investigation. For more Kansas news, click here.
