Cold weather safety tips for your pets

SAVANNAH, Ga. (WSAV) — While the Coastal Empire and Lowcountry don't typically see extremely cold weather, it's worthwhile to know how to keep your pets safe and comfortable during wintry weather.
Limiting exposure
Pets should have limited time outside during severe weather conditions, the ASPCA said on their website. If it is wet outside, be sure to towel dry your pet, specifically between their toes and footpads, to prevent any irritation.
Keeping their paws safe
If you're walking your pet on areas that have been salted or chemically treated, cover their paw pads with petroleum jelly to prevent sand and salt from getting stuck between their toes. You can also use booties, if you have them.
If you walk on ice-melting agents, be sure to fully clean your pets' feet and don't let them drink or lick any melted water, Chatham County Animals Services said. Salt slurries and other agents are toxic to dogs and cats.
Don't let them roam
Never let your pet off the lease on snow or ice. Not only is it dangerous if they run away during a severe weather event, but it can also make it much harder to find them.
For those with a fenced in yard, don't leave your pets by themselves. Stay close by so you can monitor them to ensure they don't get too cold.
Play dress up
When taking your pet outside, you can put jackets or sweaters on them. This can be especially helpful for keeping small dogs and shorthaired dogs warm.
